Doc Zone Episode Dog Dazed

Canada’s dog population has doubled over the past decade. And, with 84 million dogs now sharing public space with human beings across the continent, conflicts over canines are breaking out all over urban North America. As boomers age and millennials stall on starting families, our demographics are going to the dogs. There are now more households with dogs than kids, and that means that the canine has clout. Otherwise intelligent and reasonable human beings turn rabid when anyone criticizes their dog or attempts to limit his freedom.  Non-dog owners, forced to defend their increasingly limited turf, howl in protest.
In DOG DAZED, filmmaker Helen Slinger (listen to an interview from The Current) wades into both camps and drills deep to discover what’s fueling this insanity. With a light touch, she reveals the social and environmental impact of these furry family members. Beginning with the obvious – North American dogs deposit some 30 thousand tons of poop daily – through vicious fights over off-leash parks, to desperate bird lovers guarding precious nesting sites, Slinger takes us on a battlefield tour of the frontlines in North America’s dog wars.
“I got the idea for this film after going to a meeting to personally protest limiting my own dog’s off-leash freedom in a nearby watershed,” says Slinger. “Woke up the next morning very embarrassed that somehow I’d forgotten about the environment. Oops! A classic example of human myopia – always rich territory for a documentary.”
DOG DAZED marries classic documentary storytelling with animation created by two-time Oscar nominee Cordell Barker (The Cat Came Back) to straddle the line between send-up and serious journalism. Winnipeg-based Cordell Barker: “I think we ended up with a film that’s a terrific blend of eye-opener and entertainment. I tried to capture the goofy free-spirited quality of a dog just being a dog. If I was a dog owner I might have attempted to engender all kinds of anthropomorphic personality to the dog but, since I’ve never owned one myself, it allowed me the distance and perspective to view the dog as a simple stimulus response creature – not so unlike ourselves.”
DOG DAZED digs down into the science of why we’re so dazed by dogs with best-selling author Alexandra Horowitz (Inside of a Dog). Horowitz calls “explosive” the combination of the dog’s olfactory (smell) prowess and its unique ability to read us. “Dogs wind up being expert readers of our attention and it all starts with eye contact. They’re looking us in the eyes in the way no other animal is, no other domesticated animal and no wild animal. And then they seem to have learned how we’re using our eyes.”
And since science has now proven that we get a hormone rush when we look into our dog’s eyes, similar to what we experience looking at a human baby, it’s small wonder that people will go to the wall for their dogs, valuing them more than wildlife and more than the neighbours.
DOG DAZED crisscrosses the continent, introducing viewers to a fascinating cast of eclectic dog lovers – a couple who share their bed with a 220 pound Mastiff; a couple who went for legal joint custody – of their dog; a woman who will be interred with her dog. Viewers will also be catapulted into the middle of skirmishes between dog lovers and non-dog people in Vancouver, San Francisco and Toronto – where the fight over a tiny off-leash park had people at each other’s throats and cost the city more than $100,000.
We also see some out-of-the-box solutions to the tons of poop – from DNA testing dogs at a housing complex to turning dog doo into electricity. And from New York City, world-famous theatrical dog trainer Bill Berloni (Annie, The Wizard of Oz, Legally Blonde) shares tips on choosing the right dog to reduce conflict – for you and the dog.
DOG DAZED celebrates our love affair with canines and encourages a new relationship that values the environment, and the neighbours, as much as the dog.

DOG DAZED is written and directed by Helen Slinger and produced by Maureen Palmer and Helen Slinger for Bountiful Films in association with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

What Exactly Is Distracted Driving And Facts About Distracted Driving

It’s a phrase we’ve all heard in the news, over public service announcements, and all over the Internet. While “distracted driving” is commonly associated with using a cell phone while in the driver’s seat, the term actually means much more.

What Qualifies as a Distraction?

According to Distraction.gov, a website operated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “Distraction occurs any time you take your eyes off the road, your hands off the wheel, and your mind off your primary task: driving safely. Any non-driving activity you engage in is a potential distraction and increases your risk of crashing.”

So what falls under the classification of “distracted driving?” Here’s the list published on Distraction.gov outlining activities that qualify:

  • Texting
  • Using a cell phone or smartphone
  • Eating and drinking
  • Talking to passengers
  • Grooming
  • Reading, including maps
  • Using a navigation system
  • Watching a video
  • Adjusting a radio, CD player, or MP3 player

Dangers of Distracted Driving

According to Distraction.gov: “Sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent – at 55 mph – of driving the length of an entire football field, blind.” In addition, it also clarifies that: “Driving while using a cell phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37%.”

While eating a hamburger in the driver’s seat is significantly less dangerous than sending a text, the truth is whenever we’re doing something other than driving, we’re distracted. The NHTSA has published crash statistics stating distracted driving accounts for 1 in every 10 accidents. And in 2010, 3,092 people were killed in distraction-affected crashes.

When it comes to safe driving techniques, students in driver’s education or traffic school classes are taught to keep their focus on the road at all times. Yet distracted driving crash accidents remain a serious problem nationwide. To curb the most dangerous culprit of distraction, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the NHTSA have focused their attention on legislation limiting use of cell phones or other hand-held electronics while driving.

State Distracted Driving Laws

Even in 2013, it’s still not illegal to use your cell phone while driving in some states. In 39 states plus the District of Columbia and Guam, text messaging is banned for all drivers. In addition, 10 states plus D.C. and the Virgin Islands prohibit all drivers from using handheld cell phones for any purpose while driving. Some states have incorporated tougher laws for teen drivers, bus drivers, and commercial drivers while allowing adult drivers of non-commercial vehicles more leeway.

You might be interested to know that employees of the federal government are required to follow a set of distracted driving regulations outlined by President Obama in 2009, no matter what their state cell phone laws might be. These include:

  • No texting while driving government-owned vehicles
  • No texting when using electronic equipment supplied by the government while driving
  • No texting while driving privately-owned vehicles when they’re on official government business

Rehtaeh Parsons report wont lay blame says panel Nova Scotia

(Note:CBC does not endorse and is not responsible for the content of external links.)
A review on how the Halifax Regional School Board handled the events leading up to the death of Rehtaeh Parsons will not look into her alleged assault or the distribution of a photo linked to the allegations and will instead focus on school board policies.
Ontario-based education experts Debra Pepler and Penny Milton released an interim report on Wednesday that outlines the scope of their review.
They said the panel will not assign blame or publish the names of the people it speaks to in its review.
Rehtaeh, 17, killed herself last month after she was allegedly sexually assaulted and cyberbullied.
According to the panelists the report will ask:
The panel will also review support services for people who are bullied that are provided by schools, the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, the Capital District Health Authority and the police.
It’s due June 14.
The provincial government has set aside $70,000 dollars for the review.
“We know blame is not on the table but we would like to see some accountability,” said Glen Canning, Rehtaeh’s father.
“We’re hoping to find answers to what procedures are in place to help a child going through a traumatic experience like our daughter went through.”
Meanwhile, the man who led Nova Scotia’s taskforce on cyberbullying said creating new laws to tackle cyberbulling should be a last resort.
Wayne MacKay, a law professor at Dalhousie University, chaired the Nova Scotia Task Force on Bullying and Cyberbullying. He was also the executive director of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission.
MacKay said the federal government would be responsible for creating new laws, although enforcement is shared with provincial governments.
“I think the first thing to do is look at the laws we currently have. Are we applying those creatively and appropriately in the new cyber world?” he said Monday.
“There are things there that could be more effectively used. There’s kind of a starting idea that we shouldn’t make the criminal code any bigger than it needs to be.”
He said adding laws also risked limiting free speech and infringing on privacy.
MacKay said there are a slew of laws that can be used against some online harassment, including laws against criminal harassment, intimidation, illegal use of computers and child exploitation.
He identified a gap in the law as it protects adults and said a proposed law criminalizing sending intimate images without consent for malicious or sexual purposes had merit. Such “revenge pornography” incidents are difficult to deal with.
“That would fill a gap more on the adult side,” he said.
MacKay advocated using social pressure to combat cyberbullying.
“So much of it is about prevention and education,” he said. “The better thing is to change attitudes so the kinds of tragedies like Rehtaeh Parsons are not only not acceptable, but are not even the kind of things people would contemplate.”
He cited a senate study that said the federal government can also play a key leadership role in setting and coordinating a national strategy for dealing with cyberbullying.
“That’s almost outside of the traditional constitutional structure, because it’s really funding, because they tend to have more money, and coordinating and working with the provinces,” he said.
Ottawa also plays an international role in protecting children abused for exploitation images.

Ever Heard of the Automatic Transmission Golden Rule

Say the words, “automotive transmission repair” and most people cringe. This is because auto transmission repair can quite often be both an expensive and confusing experience for auto owners. This article offers some guidance to help you decide what steps to take.

How to know if you have an automatic transmission problem on your hands

Transmission problems have a direct impact on your vehicle’s efficiency and smoothness of operation. To diagnose any problem you need consider the symptoms your car is experiencing.

Delayed RPMs — If gears have delayed engagement, the result is a slow response when you accelerate. You may be ready to go, but your vehicle isn’t.

Transmission Slipping – One moment your vehicle’s running fine then BAM! It literally feels as though the gear has slipped and you are going nowhere fast.

Transmission Fluid Leak – If you notice a damp spot beneath your vehicle, you may have a leak in your transmission fluid. Leakage is of the major indicators of imminent automatic transmission problems.

Decide whether to take your car to an auto transmission professional vs. doing the job yourself

Today’s sophisticated auto technology means that pinpointing exact causes of automotive problems accurately requires professional diagnosis. Nearly every transmission on the road today is controlled by a computer system which is integrated into the rest of the vehicle. This means your transmission needs to be evaluated by a properly trained and experienced auto transmission technician.

Trying self diagnose or self-repair by disconnecting transmissions, batteries, or other cables can result in significant computer memory problems that may impact systems far beyond the transmission. The bottom line is that if you’re having symptoms of a problem transmission, take it to a shop that knows auto transmissions.

How to find a reputable, knowledgeable transmission repair shop

One of the most important factors selecting a skilled auto transmission repair shop is to look for the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association or ATRA symbol on their website and service site (Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association). Certified ATRA members offer a national warranty, called the Golden Rule, which provides coverage for your choice of 12, 24, or 36 months, no matter where you go in the country.

Most ATRA members also offer diagnostic and repair service for manual transmissions, clutches, differentials, driveshafts, drive axles, and transfer cases. Any transmission repair facility that are members of ATRA must adhere to their code of ethics and standards for providing professional service at an honest price. Because ATRA is the largest network of automatic transmission repair shops in the world, the Golden Rule warranty is the most widely accepted warranty of any chain or franchise.

The Representation of Gods and Goddesses in Homers The Iliad

The Homerian epic, ”The Iliad” is a historiographical narrative composed around 725BC which glorifies the Mycenian civilization of the late Bronze Age. It puts into perspective the Trojan War registering two points of view – one of the mortals and the other of the immortals. It draws its raw material from mythology and history; recapturing the belief-systems and culture of the Greek mainland notwithstanding its essence of orality.

The Iliad fulfills its essential generic requirements of the use of supernatural machinery by depicting a pantheon of gods and goddesses. The Greek historian Herodotus terms this depiction to be one of ‘anthropomorphism’ meaning human-like. Homer gives his gods and individual sense of being informing his readers of their everyday activities, family relationships and character. For instance, Zeus and Hera quarrel like any other husband and wife, after a hard day’s work they feast, Apollo plays his ”magnificent lyre” and the Muses sing and finally they sleep with their spouses at Mount Olympus. The representation of human qualities is most strongly evident when they become involved in the war to the extent of taking sides. Hera, Athene, Hephaestus and Poseidon are pro-Greek and Aphrodite, Apollo, Ares and Artemis side with the Trojans. What is spectacular about their representation is their beautifully illustrated descriptions. Hera in Book 14 is portrayed as a gorgeous and sensuous woman and her appearance has been highlighted in terms of her ”lovely skin”, ”shining locks”, and ”shimmering feet”. Aphrodite has been illustrated as having a ”superb neck” and ”desirable breasts”. Athene darts downwards like a ”mass of sparks’.’

Thetis rises from the grey-sea like a ‘mist’ and Apollo is known for inflicting his plague. It is also noteworthy that there is an establishment of a strict hierarchy among the immortals and also between the immortals and mortals, which is maintained at all points in time. Zeus is considered to be the ‘leader who controls the sceptre of power’ and his supremacy cannot be questioned. All other gods and goddesses respect his decisions. Similarly it has repeatedly been suggested that a hierarchy exists between man and god who at no cost can be neglected or dishonored. For example, Achilles states that ”the gods listen to the man who goes along with them or Calchas says that ”an ordinary mortal is no match for anyone in authority he angers… ”. These dialogues reinforce that men are expected to please gods by offering libations and chant prayers in order to survive peacefully. There have been various instances of this too, Zeus makes Hector triumphant because ”his altar has never remained empty”, the Greeks also pray to Poseidon before proceeding their deputation to convince Achilles. Longinus avers that ”homer or so it seems to me, has done his best to make the men of the Trojan War gods, and the gods men.” This was a common interpretation of the old-school critics. Analyzing the personal relationships of the immortals with the mortals it is vital to note that they have fathered or mothered them with great care. Thetis even goes on to command revival of dignity for her son Achilles from Zeus, she gets special armour and shield made for him speaks volumes of her motherly affection. Apollo inflicts a plague on the Greek army on request of his priest Chryses. Aphrodite whisks Helen into Paris’ bedroom. These incidents, whatever are their magnitude cannot help but substantiate that mortals and immortals are inextricably linked on basis of lineage, sexuality or war. R. Friedrich comments ” the bridge between the two is constructed with perfect elegance and conviction, and crowned with one of the most powerful images of the divine ever created by a Greek”

A very strong point of difference between mortals and immortals lies in the ethics of heroism and glory. By virtue of being gods and goddesses they need not fear death as opposed to the humans made of ”flesh and blood”. Thus the attainment of ‘kleos’ is the prerogative of mortals alone. The feeling of pain is experienced by the humans alone whilst the gods only experience the outflow of ichor on being wounded. However, emotionally, even the immortals feel for mortals on their death. For instance, Zeus is saddened by Sarpedon’s death. Zeus has a similar viewpoint when he is talking to Patroclus’ horses. The war however becomes a site for the immortals to settle scores among themselves. Hera uses tricks to grant victory to the Greeks by outmaneuvering Zeus in Book 14. This episode also provides comic relief to the otherwise somber meta-narrative of war. In the opinion of D.J Snider, ”… the fundamental principle of Homeric theology: the gods are both objective and subjective.” Apollo refuses to fight Poseidon over ”mere mortals” and Hephaestus states an important fact that fights of mortals set ”gods at loggerheads.”

Another important thematic concern which this description raises is that predestination verses freewill. It can be argued that gods control human life to a certain degree. Diomedes is unable to kill Hector and so unable to kill Hector and so is Achilles due to Apollo’s intervention, Helen is helpless at the hands of Aphrodite is deluded by the dream sent by Zeus. However, the fact juxtaposed with this is that humans do exercise some amount of agency for instance Achilles has the option of choosing a life of complacency over that of glory. This issue remains debatable throughout the course of the narrative. It must be remembered that Homeric gods and goddesses should not be judged in moral parameters and terming them as ‘flippant’ or ‘frivolous’ can be an over-reading of the text.

Homer in his epic poem also meets the criteria of displacing authorial identity with divine identity in the Invocation. It facilitates the negotiation between various issues of war, its ravages, consequences and its participants. In his representation of the ‘divine’, Homer

Top Notch Student Film Projects Made Easy

Because you want your project to stand out in your professor’s mind, you need to choose a medium that communicates your message in an unforgettable way. Rather than a 20-page paper full of facts, why not work on a film project? Film appeals to the visual senses and makes it easier to make your points than words and charts on a page.

Even if you aren’t skilled with the camera and camera shots, chances are you know someone who has these skills. In essence, you become the director because you know what your vision is for your class project. Remember that you’ll need to be able to communicate all your ideas to the film student and to the narrator. Once you know what you want your project to communicate, it’s simply a matter of getting these ideas onto paper so your videographer and narrator can translate them into a film your professor – and classmates – will appreciate.

Make Your Script do Double-Duty

You’ve done a lot of work in your course and you want to earn a grade that reflects this. Write up a script that touches on all the points you’re thinking of. If you want to include some visuals, such as charts, this is where you’ll be able to show your professor that you were listening in all those classes. Create those visuals so your videographer friend can include them in the film he makes for you. For instance, if you want to become an event planner, you have to be able to take your natural planning talent and combine that with what you’ve learned in your classes. Your professor needs to see that you understand everything she’s been teaching throughout the semester, so include your visuals strategically. Discuss your script with your videographer and make sure that his ideas will communicate what you’ve learned in your class.

Next, go through your script with your narrator and start working up your talking points – actually her talking points – so that what is showing onscreen matches what she will be saying during voiceovers. Your ability to become an event planner will depend on your ability to communicate your knowledge of your project’s topic.

A Project Idea

Remember, your class project has to grab everyone’s attention, make them sit up straight in their chairs, thinking, “she really knows what she’s talking about!” Create a fictional script with you and your friends acting out the action. Put on a fictional event and cast yourself as the event planner. Next, contact the film school and set up a time with your friend to film your project. As you are filming, stop periodically to watch what’s been filmed to make sure you’re communicating your message.

Wealth Book Review The Kabbalah of Money _ Jewish Insights On Giving Owning And Receiving

By: Rabbi Nilton Bonder (1996)

Published by Shambhala Publications, Inc., Horticulture Hall, 300 Massachusetts Ave. Boston, Massachusetts 02115

ISBN 1-57062-804-1

Book Price: $22.95

Rabbi presents Jewish teachings

Rabbi Nilton Bonder was born in Brazil and ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. He is the author of several books revealing Jewish teachings: Yiddishe Kop; Creative Problem Solving in Jewish Learning; Lore, and Humor; The Kabbalah of Food; and The Kabbalah of Envy.

Rabbinical teaching on money

Rabbi Nilton Bonder shares timeless Jewish money principles in ten chapters. He addresses such topics as, the limits of wealth (Ch. 2); wealth increased by having less (Ch. 5); living in the material world (Ch. 6); agents of livelihood (Ch. 7); obstacles to wealth (Ch. 8); death and wealth: can you take it with you? And much more!

Enhancing money beliefs via the Jewish context

Rabbi Nilton Bonder converses with readers in an informal, educational style. He relies heavily on Jewish thinking to inform his readers. This is seen in his opening remarks, “A Jewish aphorism tells us that a man shows his character in three ways: by his cup (that is, his appetite), his pocket (his relationship to money), and his anger.”

Insights gained from a Rabbi’s perspective amplify and qualify Bonder’s presentation. He affirms rabbinical views often, as follows, “The rabbis tell us that… our money is an extension of our reactions and beliefs.” & “The rabbis saw poverty as an unparalleled tragedy. In the Midrash (Exodus Rabbah 31:14) we read: “Nothing in the universe is worse than poverty; it is the most terrible of sufferings. A person oppressed by poverty is like someone who carries on his shoulders the weight of the whole world’s sufferings.”" He clearly communicates Jewish ideals.

Rabbi Nilton’s aim is clearly to motivate readers to embrace and act upon rabbinical wisdom, seen here: “… it is our duty to create maximum abundance for all without generating scarcity. In the language of the rabbinical Market, this is the ideal condition in which “one party doesn’t lose, and the other gains.”" Sounds like win-win!

Bonder is pointed in much of his addressing of solutions to our financial crisis. His answers carry a convicting sting as he states, “Much existing wealth cannot be made available to us, because of our unwillingness to share.”

Rabbi Nilton Bonder shares Jewish concepts that release money to us, helping readers to overcome poverty.

Anonymous wont release names of Rehtaeh Parsons suspects Nova Scotia

A group purported to be hacktivists Anonymous says that at the request of the family of Nova Scotia teenager Rehtaeh Parsons, it will withhold the names of the individuals alleged to have raped the teenager before her death, but adds others might not go along with that decision.
The 17-year-old was taken off life support and died Sunday following a suicide attempt.
Her mother, Leah Parsons, alleges Rehtaeh was raped by four boys who took photos of the incident, which she says sparked bullying and harassment.
No charges have been laid.
“We feel that honoring the Parsons’ wishes while they lay their daughter Rehtaeh to rest is the respectful thing to do,” said a statement released Thursday from the purported group.
Earlier this week, a group claiming to be the leaderless, international collective vowed to identify those involved in the victimization of the teenager. In a video, a masked figure linked to the infamous hacktivists threatened to release the young men’s names if authorities didn’t reopen the case.
Where to call for help
Kids Help Phone: 1-800-668-6868
N.S. Mental Heath Mobile Crisis Team: 1-888-429-8167
But “it has come to our attention that several names have already been posted online to various websites, even tossed around on Twitter. Be aware that 99 per cent of you have named someone that is innocent,” they wrote.
“We aren’t playing guilty until proven innocent. We apologize to those of you who want this type of justice, but bashing someone’s reputation online is just not good enough.”
In the group’s latest statement, it claims to have seen what it calls a confession from one of the young men, who admits he had sex with Rehtaeh and names three other boys who had sex with her as well.
The online collective said screenshots of this confession have been made available to police.
This has not been verified.
The group said if at some point it does decide to release names, it will ensure people know Anonymous is behind the leak.
Jon Blanchard, who says he’s a Halifax member of Anonymous, is trying to bring accountability to Nova Scotia.
Blanchard says the government’s handling of the Parsons case reminds him of neglectful bureaucracies in the developing world.
Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter has appointed four government departments to look into the death of the teen. Both Dexter and Federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson have urged people not to become vigilantes.
Blanchard said the case has attracted the collective’s attention because of a perceived lack of official concern.
“While everybody is shuffling the papers and trying to find what went wrong, they are the same people that let a 17-year-old girl kill herself,” he said.
Anonymous and its offshoot, Lulz Security, have been linked to a number of high-profile computer attacks and crimes, including many that were meant to embarrass governments, federal agencies and corporate giants
But Blanchard said he has worked with Anonymous to publicize human rights issues in the developing world, including Syria and the Maldives. He says details are different, but the government response is the same.
“We are doing the same kind of bureaucratic no-speak that they are, and it’s alarming and frankly embarrassing for me as a Nova Scotian. “
Blanchard said he hopes Rehtaeh’s legacy will be one of change.
“What the Anonymous community is trying to do is make sure that she did not die in vain.”
A demonstration outside police headquarters in Halifax this weekend will be held by the group claiming to be Anonymous.

Modern Gamebooks Rock RED DOG

Well, it started with The Warlock of Firetop Mountain and ended with the games console but is anybody else still hankering for that long dispelled thrill of the choose your adventure / fighting fantasy style gamebook?

Well, with the advancement of mobile phone apps, they are making a big comeback and a new generation are enjoying the retro thrills of an adventure where there are the star of the show.

But that’s not what I want to talk about here. Yes, they were fun at the time, but they have had their day. Haven’t they?

Apparently not as there is a new explosion of writers out there who have re opened pandora’s box with the belief that despite new polygon pushing processors on our HD screens, there is yet to be a console with wiring as complex and capable of imagining palpable science fiction as our very own brains. Well, most of our brains.

I trawled the internet for a high scoring gamebook I could get my hands on (yes, my actual hands, not at the other end of a gamepad) and I found a wealth of choice. The best of which was from Sandboxer Books who are new to the game and boy oh boy was I happy I picked it up! The original Fighting Fantasy Books were an open pit in which I poured hours of my childhood, each spanning 400 ‘chapters’ but this one is 530 long passages. It is huge. I got a lot of enjoyment out of it. I spent a lot of time with it. Now I need more.

It is called RED DOG and is by author Chris Young, apparently his first forage into this genre (at least that I could find.) Now, this is a ‘choose your adventure’ with a difference. Ever snuck back under the cover of darkness to your childhood and had another bite of the Fighting Fantasy cherry? Well this adventure is written better, is longer and free roaming. You heard it here folks. You are not forced down the garden path this time on a linear adventure. You can go where you like. It really is like having another world in your pocket. That is if you have clowns pockets because if you want a copy you had better have a tall bookcase. Its 9 by 6 inches!

Here’s the specs:-

”This is not the Earth you remember. Dragged from the present and into this dark and dangerous future, you have total freedom to uncover the hidden secrets of Earth, space station ‘Eden’ and the mysterious Blackbird Facility. Uncover a determined threat to the freedom of mankind and take your part in the revolution. The future is in your hands. RED DOG: A complete Fantasy Role Playing Game. Give it a blast and help me put pressure on these guys to write another! Here is my review on Amazon:

I bought this because I used to be into the Fighting Fantasy ‘Choose your adventure’ books and thought I’d try it out. The mecha on the front is cool. The book completely blew me away. I really wasn’t expecting to get so drawn into it, it’s a really deep sort of experience and I like the way you start off with no memory of how you got there and it all gets explained on the way.

Compared to the books I read as a kid, it’s much more challenging and a hell of a lot bigger too. Its a big book. The pictures are great though I would have liked to see more of them and the gameplay is quite different from the FF books but I think it’s for adults.

There are no dice. I never used dice anyway so I didn’t miss that. It uses a kind of code system so you will need a pencil to write them down. For example, at one point I got a ‘Stealth’ chip implanted in my brain so I could use it anywhere and basically disappear. The way you can go back to places you already visited and use it is cool. You add the code to the page to use ‘Stealth’ which means you are not limited in how or where you use it. This gives you plenty of freedom and means that you can do what you want.

There much more freedom rather than being linear. I just wandered around, searching for stuff. There are books hidden all over the place which are all one story and it’s fun to find them and read them. It’s all connected and makes it rewarding to look around. And another thing I liked was that I didn’t get killed off for something that wasn’t my fault. The mecha is cool. You have to learn how to control it which is a great idea but I don’t want to spoil it so I’ll just say give it a go.

Overall, I highly recommend it. Definitely a big leap from the old school books. I wanted to get another one but this is the only one I could find by these guys, hopefully they’ll release another one I’d definitely play it.”

So there you have it guys. I’ll be emailing Sandboxer if I can find them and petitioning a second book. Read this and you’ll be doing the same!

Keep on keeping on folks

James

Choose Yourself _ Interesting Thought

It’s not original.

James Altucher has published a new E-Book called, Choose Yourself.

Of course I have bought it and am reading it now. As always, reading Altucher makes me think.

I enjoy his writing for several reasons; his background and theories fascinate me:

  • made and lost billions,
  • published over 10 books,
  • started and lost several businesses,
  • is a passionate entrepreneur
  • is highly critical of all institutions whether federal or corporate or academic
  • has hit the bottom in just about every way,
  • but now is alive and well and itching to tell his story.

But a much more important reason that I enjoy reading Altucher’s is that he challenges me.

Here are a couple of examples.

Grabbing his reader’s attention with a chapter called, “”Why Do So Many People Want to Die?”, Altucher tells us that the search term most likely to take people to his blog is, “I want to die.”

And the number two?

“I hope to die” with number three only slightly more optimistic with, “How can I disappear?”

James Altucher makes it clear that he has been there; he has thought these thoughts of self annihilation, he’s not surprised at the fact that a lot of people think a lot about dying.

I am.

Therefore his tips to those who feel that they are failing at their lives hold credence, more perhaps than the rote feel good material that is read with dispassion.

Develop what he calls, a simple daily practice. Now that is not new, of course, all of the major traditions and motivational gurus talk about the importance of a daily practice. But Altucher puts his own unique spin on it:

  • “Most people speak 2500 words per day, I try to speak just 1000 words per day. This forces me to carefully choose my words and who I engage with.
  • Sleep 8 hours.
  • Exercise.
  • No TV or junk food.
  • No complaining for one day.
  • No gossip.
  • Forgive someone.
  • Eat 2 meals rather than 3.
  • Read a spiritual text, anyone you want.
  • Write down the 10 things you do every day, then cross out one and don’t do it anymore.

These are only a few of the list of tips aimed at helping the many men and women who write this guy in desperate need of solace, of a way out, of understanding, or a lifeline.

If you are not nor have ever been there, be grateful. But consider a read for those friends who are.

If you are there, read it.

Campgrounds Are Changing Dramatically

Almost everyone knows recreational time is a needed commodity in our lives. It is also quite cherished. In our lives, there are quite simply such a broad spectrum of recreation it’s hard to choose one. A vast amount of the human race has found camping to be a great way to recreate ones self. The beauty of nature and the excitement that one might experience while camping is immeasurable. The camping trip success largely can sometimes be determined by the choice of where one chooses to stay. If one does not like heat and tons of sun, a trip to the beach may not be the answer.

Many people are turning to pulling a travel trailer or using some form of recreational vehicle to fill their need for the ultimate in camping experiences. Some rent one while others choose to purchase one so that can use it any time. One of the great features of ownership is the simplicity in not having to load and unload it. This in itself improves the experience.

The number of people choosing this pastime to meet their recreational needs is growing rapidly. This is causing a dramatic change in many of the campgrounds across America. We are seeing campgrounds upgraded to looking like a resort.

Why are these campgrounds going in that direction? First people have bought nicer and nicer RV’s. They are finding it much easier and more affordable than renting a house at the resort. Yet, they would still like to have the amenities. Thus, the campgrounds are moving more in that direction so as to catch the new modern camper.

So when you go to a campground that has made the changes, you will find more than a gravel drive to park your rig on, and a place to plug it in. You will find in some things such as paved parking pads, cable tv hook ups, sewer and water, and electric that now can reach 50 amps.

For those of you looking for the upgraded facilities, one might investigate on the internet before choosing which campground to choose. Others that still like the old style campgrounds don’t worry. There are plenty of choices still remaining for you top choose from. You too will be better served by doing some research before you select a campground to stay in. I wish you the best in all your travels. I am sure you will be happy either way. Happy Camping!!

Animating Logos for the Future of Holographic Personal Tech and Entertainment

The other day, I was talking to a local our group and they came up with a new logo. The logo was quite good, quite symmetrical, and I immediately noted how crisp and clean it was and how well it would work for 3-D renderings. It would work well in a flash presentation, as the abstract letters of the group formed a rather nifty design. It was abstract enough to be many different things besides just letters on a page. It was bold yet unobtrusive, unique but familiar, and it was chaotic but symmetrical. In fact it had almost every quality you’d want in a logo. Let’s go ahead and talk about this for second, from a graphic artists’ standpoint, shall we?

The reason I mention all this is because in the future logos for corporations, organizations, perhaps even government agencies will not remain static, nor will they remain two-dimensional. They will become 3-D objects, they will be animated and they will move, full of life and motion and color. They will have sounds, perhaps smell, and they will tickle the mind’s fancy, tricking your senses into frame bursting something that isn’t there, conjuring up an idea or concept or thought driven from your innate characteristics which make you who you are. You may love them, hate them, but they will be everywhere, and it will be part of you along with a part of your mind’s eye.

Are you ready for that future? I would submit to you that if you are graphic designer you need to get ready, and you need to stay on the leading edge, or the bleeding edge of these new technologies. The reality is that the future of holographic personal tech and entertainment, video games, outdoor concerts, road signs, and just about everything from education to corporate training will involve holograms, as we blur our virtual world with our real one. And I’m not just talking about exotic and expensive living room videogames, sure, that’s how it will probably start, but soon it will be everywhere.

Your cereal box may come alive, holographic video messages may pop up wherever you go. Your car may not have a seatbelt buzzer to remind you put on your seatbelt, rather a hologram will show you why – perhaps a quick hologram of a car crash? As a matter of fact just about whatever you can think, or any application you can imagine, will come to pass in our future holographic world, and things will never be the same again. If you plan on running your company, organization, or agency for unlawful long time, you need to consider a logo which is highly ready to animate in 3-D. Please consider all this and think on it.

Here Is How to Choose the Best Tire for Your Car

Car ownership can be an easy or hard task depending on just how much you know about a car in general. In fact, many car owners are usually surprised at just how little their knowledge of the machine they are hauling on the road is when they find themselves in an unfortunate situation on the road and the their mechanic is suddenly out of reach.

It is usually at this point when it also dawns on you that the nearest service station is a considerable number of miles away from where you are stuck. This is the point in time when you need to summon all the knowledge you might have about cars to figure out what could be wrong before making any decision.

Let’s start by assuming that the problem is something to do with tires of the vehicle. What are some of the basic issues that any car owner needs to be familiar with? What can you do, and where do you start? Well, here is the down low.

A tire is basically the rubber part that surrounds the wheel and provides essential cushioning between the road and the vehicle. The function performed by the tires is very closely related to that provided by the springs but more pronounced. They help to immensely reduce transmission of shocks from the road to the car. However, the most important function is perhaps the provision of friction that actually allows the vehicle to move on the road and also perform other important functions. In a nutshell, your car will not move without the friction provided by the car; now you know why you need to replace your tires on a regular basis.

There are two main types of tire constructions in the market today:

a. Cross-ply

b. Radial

Radial tires are commonly used on passenger vehicles, 4-wheel drives and heavy vehicles. The criss-crossed cords of the cross-play tires are ideal for lighter vehicles.

Tires can also be classified as tubeless or tube tires. A tubed tire is basically composed of the outer thick rubber and an inner tube to tightly seal the air inside the tire. On the other hand, a tubeless tire consists of an assembly of completely air tight tire thereby eliminating the need for a tube; a specially designed valve that can effectively hold in the air is critical in this case. The entire construction can either be held in position using sealing washers and nuts or the tight fit of the tire onto the rim.

In a nutshell, the specifications to look out for in a tire include the rim size, aspect ratio, maximum speed and load allowable, the type of tire construction and in some cases, the manufacturer’s name.

All this information can be found on the markings present on the side of the tire. It is important to make a good selection of a tire to avoid unnecessary breakdowns.

Effectiveness of OPEC in Controlling Crude Oil Prices

Decade after its formation OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) took over from ‘Texas Railroad Commission’ as an unofficial governing body influencing international crude oil pricing. However ever since, there have been arguments put forth to diminish any such claims favouring OPEC. Let us study further, during all these years how effective OPEC has actually been in controlling international crude prices.

OPEC today has in total 12 members (5 founder members and rest included in the conference at a later stage). Each of its members represents a separate political entity and has different oil producing capabilities. They all are bound together with a common bond of crude.

With exception of Saudi Arabia rest all the OPEC members produce oil at almost to their full capacities and have very little scope to increase the supply if required. This drawback often raises question marks on OPECs capability to reduce crude prices by increasing its output unless backed by Saudi Arabia.

One of such instances occurred during 1979-80 when there was an unprecedented increase in international crude prices. In spite of Saudi Arabia’s warning to other member countries to increase the supply, they all refused to co-operate as they wanted to maximise their realizations out of sales at higher prices. Saudi Arabia was aware of the situation that these high prices will negatively affect the crude’s demand in the world market. Under such circumstances Saudi Arabia unilaterally acted by increasing the supply and brought some relief in the rising price levels.

As a result of high price realization for crude other non-OPEC countries increased their budget on oil exploration. Within few years’ non-OPEC countries were able to increase their oil production by 10,000 barrels/day, resulting in reduced dependency on OPEC members.

Yet again in year 1982-85 OPEC tried to enforce production quotas for member countries to stabilize crude prices. The exercise proved to be futile again as member countries continued to produce well beyond their quota limits. Saudi Arabia even tried fixing their crude prices with a function to prevailing spot prices, but the same was also not supported by other community members.

So time and again there have been instances of lack of co-ordination among member nations of OPEC, raising serious doubt on its ability to control crude prices. Though OPEC even today stands as a premier association of crude oil supplying nations, but it cannot be categorized as a governing body which can fully control international crude prices.

Will the Catholic Church Change Its Position On Birth Control Before a Mega Over Population Collapse

Okay so, I run a small group of networked think tanks. This is something that I created because I wanted to do something to fix the world, to make changes, and to leave the place better than when I got here. That may not be as easy as one might contemplate considering some of the challenges that face mankind in the future. One of the biggest challenges of all of course is overpopulation, and the reality that if we keep growing at the same rate we will eat ourselves out of house and home. That’s all we have right now is the earth to sustain us all, so such a potential eventuality could be rather problematic.

You can imagine that this topic comes up quite often at our think tank, and other think tanks around the world; the issue of overpopulation that is. Not long ago I met a gentleman who wrote a very interesting book. In fact I’d like to recommend that you get a copy, and even if you disagree with some of his assumptions, it will be hard to refute the end result if we don’t curb our ever-growing human population on this planet. The name of the book is;

“Humans: An Endangered Species – The Only Solution” by Jason G. Brent, Self-Published, Las Vegas, NV, 2012, 121 pages, ISBN: 978-0-9854129-6.

One thing he mentions in the book is the challenge we have with human superstition and religion, specifically some of the largest faith-based organizations in the world. These very large religions have been going on quite a long time and they have a significant following, each of the major religions has hundreds of millions of followers, and the largest have over 1 billion. Think about that for a second. For instance if the Catholic Church decides that birth control is a bad idea, what is to stop all those folks from over procreating their communities, nation-states, continents, and the world?

Will the Catholic Church ever change its policy on birth control? They’re going to have to, so I imagine they will. In fact I think that we are seeing some changes now. Yes, it may come at a detriment to the number of future followers, but in the end it will be good for the forward progression of the species, and keeping us from any nearer term future calamity. If mankind doesn’t do something about the overpopulation problem, Mother Nature will, and I guarantee you at that point we won’t like what Mother Nature has in store. Please consider all this and think on it.

Business group urges caution with wireless auction

Canada’s biggest business group is urging the federal government to think long and hard before allowing a foreign giant an upper-hand in the country’s wireless market.
There have been reports that big U.S. carrier Verizon wants to buy Wind Mobile — and possibly struggling Mobilicity — as a way to enter the Canadian market.
Canada’s big wireless carriers have launched a media blitz to warn that, under the current rules, they would be at a disadvantage if Verizon were allowed into the market.
With Industry Canada just months away from another wireless spectrum auction, Industry Minister James Moore needs to take time to rethink the auction rules, said Canadian Chamber of Commerce president Perrin Beatty.
“As a former minister responsible for Canada’s telecommunications policy, I can say that it’s infinitely more important to be right than to be fast,” Beatty said in a statement posted online Thursday.
“With so much at stake for Canada, it’s important to take whatever time is needed to get the decision right.”
Verizon is also considering entering the spectrum auction set for January. Spectrum is the term used to describe frequencies used by wireless carriers that are owned and licensed by the government through bidding.
The next auction is particularly crucial because the 700 MHz frequency will be on the selling block.
The Chamber of Commerce is the latest organization to voice its frustration with the rules governing new entrants into Canada’s telecom industry.
The Canadian Council of Chief Executives and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada have called on the government to allow all wireless companies to operate under the same level playing field.
Moore has rejected pleas from Bell, Rogers, and Telus to rethink the rules, suggesting he will stick to the policy on selling wireless spectrum that was in place the last time there was an auction in 2008.
That policy, modified only slightly in 2012, allows for foreign ownership of Canadian carriers with less than 10 per cent of the market.
It also prevents established Canadian companies from buying small carriers.
With a combined subscriber base of nearly 25 million customers, Bell, Rogers and Telus currently own the vast majority of Canada’s wireless market.
In a statement issued Wednesday, Moore said more competition in the telecom industry has been good for consumers.
“Our policy has been clear and remains unchanged: greater competition and liberalized investment has meant more choices at lower prices for Canadian families,” Moore said.
Moore also appeared to pre-empt the comments from Beatty, saying the Harper Conservatives have already spent enough time considering the rules before putting them in place.
“Our government’s telecommunications policy was not created overnight,” he said.
“It is the result of a vigorous consultation that started in 2008 and continues today.”
But the government must now consider the consequences of its policy on not just the big players, but the new, smaller ones, too, said Beatty.
“Will (the small carriers) survive now that international giants are poised to take advantage of the special benefits designed specifically for our smaller domestic players?” he said.
“It will be a huge black eye to the government if these players are swallowed up.”
All three of Canada’s major telecom companies reached out to Prime Minister Stephen Harper early last month, urging him to close three loopholes in the rules that they say favour foreign interests.
On Thursday, they repeated the call for Ottawa to permit any carrier to bid on two blocks of prime spectrum in the upcoming auction.
In separate statements, they also urged the government to require American carriers to build their own wireless infrastructure across the country and to let major Canadian carriers bid against major foreign firms to acquire wireless startups.

Do You Know The Proper Hand Signals For Knuckleboom Trucks

Whenever operating equipment such as industrial or heavy equipment, being able to clearly communicate with co-workers or other people at a job site is essential for everyone’s safety. Due to the noise common when operating many types of equipment, OSHA has added to crane operator requirements the ability to understand and communicate with certain hand and verbal signals; workers are even beginning to be qualified for this job to help keep communication open between equipment operators and anyone observing the work without being a direct part of the actual machine operations.

Knowing Job Site Hand Signals

Even in the best of environments, listening for cautions and warnings is not always possible. On a noisy industrial job site, there is little chance that a worker’s voice would be heard over noise generated by the equipment or truck itself. In such situations, the best way to communicate clearly has always been with hand gestures and OSHA is working to increase all crane operator awareness to such signals and meanings.

When operating many commercial heavy-duty vehicles, all it takes is a fraction of a second for something to go wrong, which means there should always be spotters and other trained personnel watching work progress, ready to stop it should a problem develop. The most reliable way to communicate with equipment or vehicle operators from a safe distance is through hand signals, which every operator should watch for and be able to interpret quickly in order to act accordingly. Through fast, precise, non-verbal communication between signal person and operator, accidents damaging the vehicle or the job site can be avoided – which is the main goal.

Qualifying As a Signal Person

Since equipment operators, workers, and other personnel will be depending on the signal person to be observing the work and ready to relay warnings quickly and accurately, candidates for this job must meet the following:

  • Understand Crane Operations – Before a signal person can work effectively, it is important to understand how cranes and knuckleboom trucks operate, any limitations, and typical use or maneuvers that could be dangerous. This person will only be able to provide correct directions to operators by understanding ahead of time how the vehicle is likely to react or must be operated to prevent problems.
  • Know Standardized Hand Gestures – Every qualified worker must know and explicitly understand all standardized signals and be able to accurately display them in all situations. Although some companies may continue to use localized hand gestures, this is being discouraged by OSHA as emphasis is being made for all companies to adopt standardized gestures for personnel training and qualification.
  • Know Voice Signals and Usage – There are also verbal cautions related to the different hand signals, even though most of the time voices cannot be heard. In any situations where verbal warnings can be used, it must be done in certain ways, in certain tones, etc.. to be recognized. Knowledge of correct verbal warnings is an important part of passing the certification exam.
  • Understand Routine and Special Assignment Zones – The primary job of a signal worker is to oversee and assist during routine equipment use. Certified workers must also be capable of overseeing and evaluating special lifting situations, such as relaying information between such workers, lifting in prohibited areas, and any lifts that involve raising workers to a higher level.
  • Reaction and The Breakdown of Correct Communications – If communication through gestures has somehow broken down, qualified signal workers should be able to quickly determine options to regain control of the situation and be able to use such options. It is essential to be able to prevent accident or injury in spite of any glitches in communications.

Although most of this seems to be common sense, a thorough understanding of hand gestures on the job site is essential because of the precise and specific language spoken between signal persons and team members. Extensive knowledge of communications must be known and used when working with equipment such as knuckleboom trucks in order to keep things moving as safely as possible!

7 unanswered questions about the Toronto streetcar shooting

While demonstrators protest the weekend shooting of Sammy Yatim on a Toronto streetcar, questions remain about the sequence of events that led police to use deadly force to neutralize a suspect armed only with a knife.
Yatim was killed on a streetcar in Toronto’s west end just after midnight ET Saturday. Much of the incident was captured on amateur video.
What we do know is that the entire incident transpired in about 10 minutes. Just after midnight, Yatim reportedly stood up and brandished a knife on the 505 streetcar on Dundas Street West near Trinity Bellwoods Park.
A few minutes later, police arrived at the scene. At that point, Yatim was alone on the stationary streetcar. A standoff quickly ensued, and within the space of 13 seconds one officer had fired nine shots.
Yatim was given CPR at the scene and then taken to hospital, where he was declared dead.
Here’s a look at some of the unanswered questions.
In addition to the fact that he was carrying a knife, there have been reports that Yatim exposed himself to fellow riders before ordering them and the driver off the streetcar.
It’s unclear who alerted the police and when – was it a passenger, the driver, a witness on the street? Whoever it was, the first police responders arrived at the scene within a minute or two.
As soon as the police arrived, there was a standoff – Yatim at the front of the streetcar, visible through the front door, exchanging strong words with several officers standing just outside the car.
Yatim, showing a knife, was the only person on the streetcar at this point. Some commentators have suggested that police could have barricaded Yatim in the streetcar until he had calmed down.
During the standoff, officers yelled several times for Yatim to “drop the knife.” At one point in the amateur video of the incident, an officer can be heard saying, “If you take one step in this direction now, that’s it for you.”
There were 22 officers on the scene – as one newspaper columnist noted, “more than enough, it would seem at first blush, to contain a man with a knife.”
When it appeared as though Yatim would not comply with the police order to drop the knife, one officer fired three gunshots in quick succession, followed by a five-second pause and then six more shots.
Ross McLean, a security expert and former Toronto police officer, noted the change in posture of the shooting officer after he had discharged the first three shots. The officer’s arms had come down from their initial upright shooting position to a more relaxed shooting position, which suggests that Yatim had been felled by the first three shots and that with the second barrage of shots, the officer was shooting closer to the floor of the streetcar.
Only one officer appeared to be pointing a gun at Yatim, and it was this same officer who discharged all nine shots.
The officer, identified as six-year veteran James Forcillo, has been suspended with pay.
An enhanced version of the video reveals that one of the officers gave Yatim a six-second jolt from a Taser after he had been shot, McLean said.
“Should you be Tasering someone who’s been shot six or nine times and lying on the ground?” he asked.
Reports suggest that no one had a Taser at the ready when the standoff began. McLean told CBC News if police had waited for an officer with the Taser to arrive instead of opening fire, Yatim might still be alive.

Head First Java a Peculiar Style of Learning

A Different Style of Learning

Due to a justifiable reputation for being difficult to learn, the java programming language has long needed a training course that could ease the journey. By adopting an interesting comic book approach that mixes peculiar art works with a clever teaching style, the authors of Head First Java provide an easy to grasp solution to the java education problem.

A Full Featured Java Training Course

Though simplistic in presentation, Head First Java is a fast paced book. After presenting an early introduction into the features of object-oriented programming, the author’s move quick to link java into the applications of encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism. The book addresses the GUI programming front, network programming, midi sequencing, and the command lines of the java library. Though sometimes limited in content, the range of topic coverage is considerable. Every reader will close the final pages with a workable foundation in java application.

Advantages

Head First Java targets experienced programmers. The material, as presented, assumes that the student possesses a reasonable familiarity with several basic programming topics. Yet the applied approach to learning is intuitive in nature, almost equivalent to a child’s word game. The difficult components of the object-oriented programming design model are exposed in easy to understand byte sized nuggets. Concepts like inheritance and polymorphism take on a new aspect of reader clarity. Even the beginner programming student can profit from this book.

Disadvantages

While resourceful and helpful, the strange teaching methods used by the authors of Head First Java are sometimes offensive in nature. If crude mannerism has become a necessary component of effective teaching, Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates have hit the mark.

Final Points

The teaching style used in Head First Java resides outside the world of mundane education. The book, though at times crude, is generally acknowledged as a “fun” read that successfully accomplishes its primary purpose. It teaches the student how to effectively apply the java programming language.

Acquire the book, apply its wisdom to the challenge of learning Java, and have some fun with the illustrations to boot. Follow along through example, practice, and corny jokes as Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates reduce the java coding language into a manageable and usable designer’s tool.

Review of Mike Maloneys Book Guide to Investing in Gold and Silver

Hello, Steven here, and thanks for reading my article. If you’re looking for a review of Mike Maloney’s best-selling book, ‘Guide to Investing in Gold and Silver’ you’ve come to the right place.

The book is part of Robert Kiyosaki’s series of ‘Rich Dad’ books advising on financial management and wealth creation, and was published in 2008. It is the best-selling book on investing in precious metals ever published. The author is the CEO and founder of GoldSilver.com.

Divided into 4 sections, the book focuses respectively on the history of money, the current situation of the monetary system, how the situation is likely to develop and the different ways people can obtain gold and silver, including pitfalls to be avoided.

The book starts with the monetary systems of the ancient world, and the reader will soon realize that the saying “there is nothing new under the sun” applies to the history of money just like everything else. The reader is guided through the debasement of the coinage in ancient Rome, and its origins in spending promises by the political class to gain popularity, but which could never be delivered.

The original gold and silver coins were made smaller, debased by mixing with lower value metals, and re-cast with higher values stamped on them. This served to increase the supply of money but had the effect of making each unit of money less valuable. More recently the book outlines the period of the classical gold standard from the 19th Century to World War One, the gold standard light system of Bretton Woods after World War Two, and the ending of the convertibility of the US dollar to gold by President Nixon on 15th August 1971.

With regard to the current situation, Mike argues that the value of most financial assets have been falling since 1999/2000, which was both the bottom of the gold market and the top of the stock market. This time was when paper assets were most coveted, and the real money of silver and gold most over-looked. Although the price of paper assets may have increased in nominal terms, in reality their fall in value has been hidden by inflation.

The book discusses the soaring government deficits and liabilities, and that these are being financed by increasing the money supply. Mike argues that the market cycle is turning away from paper assets, and in favour of the historic money of gold and silver.

The fourth section contains a comprehensive overview of the ways to buy precious metals, including pitfalls to avoid.

The book was easy to read and informative, and I would recommend it both specifically as a guide on precious metals, and more generally for improving peoples financial education.

Secured Retirement Investing Requires Thoughtful Planning and Education

Many financial pundits embrace grandiose theories and use mathematical formulas to convince the vast sea of American Investors to accept their vision of the perfect American Retirement Account Balance. They make statements like “by the time you are sixty five you should have X$ in your retirement portfolio to cover health care costs or to live the perfect dream of exotic travel and extravagant lifestyle of spend, spend and more spending. Retirement plans and accounts, however, are like “beauty” it is in the “Eye of the Beholder”! My perfect retirement lifestyle is not necessarily my cousin’s or for that matter my next door neighbor’s. We all have different interests, needs, and desires.A But we all do share one thing in common we deal in a risky business indeed called Investing.

It may not be a forgone conclusion; that Penny Stock Investors are investing for retirement. Some will develop an investment portfolio to hedge their current business needs whatever that may be. Some may invest just to prove to themselves and others that they can, while still others invest as a business to generate their monthly income in order to meet obligations. Still others invest for one goal, to build up a massive amount of cash these are typically referred to as “Day Traders.

This article is not an attempt to convince anyone how to invest or why for that matter, it is simply to give another point of view for the motivation of investing. The need to think about retirement whether you are a full time investor or just starting out or you have been a “bi-vocational” investor for years.

No matter your motivation allow me to make a case for you to invest with one eye looking down the road to retirement regardless of how long or short that may be. We all know instinctively that one day we will “give up”, “give out”, or “wear out”! Now I am not trying to be pessimistic or to be a bearer of bad news especially for those of you in your twenties and thirties. But what I am tying to impress on everyone is that just like in the market, life has no guarantees! By that I mean life and the market share the same propensity for change, volatility, risk, and dare I say fees, loads, and charges. Why do you think that the game of Monopoly is so popular? Because Monopoly like real life reflects the whole concept of “Time and Chance”.

For those folks who are the always the winner at Monopoly remember this, life isn’t a board game and you cannot ever memorize all the cards that will be thrown at you. This is just like Investing! Multiple volatile conditions affect your investments 24/7 and there is nothing that can stop Time and Chance from happening to you or anyone else for that matter. Since we are all equipped with this basic knowledge wouldn’t it be prudent to at least look down the road and work up for yourself a basic vision of what kind of retirement you would like to have and at what age? Here are a few topics for your consideration.

Living arrangements – Family residence, condo/town home, retirement village? How much will that cost based on today’s economy and then calculate from your current age to your perfect retirement age how many years that is multiplied by 3% for inflation. You will need to revisit this about every year to adjust for current inflation rates. Currently inflation isn’t really an issue but that wont always be the case.

Health Care Costs- we don’t really know what these will be any more than we can actually count the stars in the night sky. This is true for most investors living in the U.S. now days. Since this is a High Risk area we need an alternative plan other than just cash accumulation. There are two key concepts you need to study “Mortality & Morbidity”. They will make you feel real happy! Not!

Food – Now here is a topic that whole 2hr seminars have been based around. Many folks living today who are in the Boomer generation can remember when the cost of a loaf of bread was.75

Cents and a cup of coffee at a restaurant was.25 cents. How about the incredible edible Egg? from 1985-1987 the price per dozen ranged from 42.9 cents to 51.5 cents.

(Cooperative Extension University of California Number 85 June 30, 1988)

Currently in 2012 one dozen large grade “A” eggs are selling for $1.7059 while the organic brown shell eggs in a carton range from $2.61- $3.16

(http://www.ams.usda.gov/pymarketnews.htm or PYMNDSM@ams.usda.gov)

Based on just these three areas of life we can deduce that living will be more expensive in the future than it is right now. And this is not taking into consideration the punitive tax system we are under in the United States currently or the new taxes that have and will be voted into existence before and during our retirement.

What areas can we offset the risk with careful planning? Well for one, risk can be reduced by a well thought out investment plan focusing on an annual return that will beat inflation and keep up with the market while never delivering bad news like a negative return. I think that you would agree that these types of accounts would be the perfect holding area for your “Bread and Butter” retirement fund. What are these types of accounts? Well they are widely available in every city, state and the whole nation for that matter they are Indexed Annuities.

The Indexed Annuity with safety and a guaranty income provision can provide income protection for you for life and while you wait to start the income the account can grow and compound the returns on the interest generated, and on the Taxes you would have paid if the money were in another type of interest bearing account. And never give you a negative return.

Some investors work from a forward looking strategy and determine what there Social Security income will be when they reach either their max retirement age or when they can take it the earliest and begin to accumulate that much cash reserves or purchase an annuity with that much money and let that keep up with inflation. Then go along there happy way being the raging stock investor they are on the inside.

Now couple this with a disciplined Investment Strategy and you have a retirement focused plan where you can have the peace of mind that your retirement funds will always be safe and growing, while at the same time focus on the business at hand that of being the best penny stock investor you can be.

All the Best & Happy Investing!

P.S. In my next article entitled “Create an Investment “Safety Net” with Old Fashioned Insurance”. I am going to reveal little known tips and strategies that most married couples have not considered. These concepts will help married couples who have one investor minded partner and another who is so frightened about risking their financial future that they wont even dole out a quarter in a payphone for fear of losing it.And the secrets that affluent people have used in order to get their hands on tax free cash to invest and buy businesses.

Why Bother Reading the Latest Research When Online Tech Magazines Summarize It All

Reading popular tech magazines and high tech magazines online saves a lot of time. No one has the time to go through all of the scientific journals and read papers on every subject. Research papers are produced now in such mass quantity, and often universities and researchers are doing the same types of studies getting similar results, and each of their papers is published in a separate or different journal.

The other day someone had given me a slight critique and told me that the knowledge I had on various subjects was not as good as his because he read the actual scientific journals, and I only read the tech magazines summaries. That’s not exactly true, I read both, but the summary type articles in a much higher percentage of course. Okay so, let’s explore this thought for a second shall we?

First, there is no way that one individual can read all the scientific journals in all the different areas of science. Therefore by him only reading the scientific articles and those journals he is limited in the amount of information he takes in. Further, if I read and scan hundreds of tech magazines summaries per day I can follow all of the areas of science, and anything notable that catches the eye of a science writer. Indeed, in explaining this to my acquaintance he dismissed my notion, but I also explained to him that I could always look up the scientific research in the Journal if I read something that I wanted to pursue further.

Now then, if you are working in a very limited niche of science then perhaps you get aggravated reading some of the tech magazines summaries. Often the writers get it wrong, or don’t fully understand the topic they are writing about. And since you know a lot about the individual niche subject matter you can spot mistakes right away. I noted that those research folks often leave comments explaining how a popular magazine science writer got it wrong, and what the paper actually says, and what the research indeed means.

Still, to get into that discussion and debate, which is also online in those popular magazine science articles, you have to go and read them, and then read the comments at the bottom. When you read a scientific journal, you may or may not get the follow up comments until the next issue. It seems the tech articles are a better way to communicate through summarizing. I’m sure even if you read actual journal articles you will admit that you do a lot of skipping and skimming as time is valuable, so you are really only reading be summary, conclusion, and abstract anyway – so what’s the difference?

For those of us that need to know a lot about a lot of things, it seems to me that reading these summaries in the popular magazines or in the online news is probably the better way to go. So, I hereby completely dismiss the critique of those who are not of the same view. Please consider all this and think on it.

Method Weight Management II How Not to Be a Fat Cat

I was surprised at the honest simplicity of Method Weight Management. While my own weight problem has often been under weight, I was familiar with the problems of overweight people, in that, like myself and so many others, we tend to neglect our health while trying to do too much. Aside from shear calories and exercise, author Carrol Wolverton points out that our lifestyles often lead us into a series of small, but consistent foolish mistakes that keep harming our health. Just as a series of small leaks sink a ship, so do the constant abuses of missing sleep, exercise and nutritious food sink our healthy weight.

As a male, I often ignore the hang ups that people have over exercising. But, as a personal trainer, I am glad that Wolverton talks about these small shames that keep people in their bloating eating habits and overall life miseries. For example, having a job that one hates, keeps one stressed enough to seek quick relief in the form of high sugar snacks, excessive caffeine, tobacco or unhealthy undertakings. I like the way that the author does not pull any punches and just explains that well, it is up to you to plan and get another job or improve your situation as it is not just going to happen on its own. Carrol Wolverton is blunt about the lifestyles and attitudes that lead to poor health and over-weight. It is the habits and mistakes that consistently chip away at our ability to cope and be who we really are. She dismisses people’s embarrassment over exercise and lack of esteem allow that keep them fat. As she comments regarding bicycling. “Don’t want your ‘friends’ poking fun at you for peddling your derriere around town? My standard comeback is ‘I prefer a size 2 to a 22.”

It is refreshing to read her observations and experiences on how this culture of shame keeps so many people in over-weight misery.

As a single guy, I appreciated the simple recipes at the back of the book, showing that healthy eating can be cheap, easy to prepare and quick. Almost all of the recipes take less than 1/2 an hour to make and support a bachelor, bachelorette or hurried parent’s need for minimal clean up.

Tightly written, straight up talk with some humor by a single working mother. I have studied nutrition and behavior modification for years and still found useful information in this little book. Made me think about my own lifestyle. Highly recommended.

The Best Books For Bar Exam Preparation

Preparing for the bar exam requires you to practice, practice and practice more, but having the right resources to study from is equally important. This article’s focus is upon the materials that worked for me and came recommended to me from ABA law school graduates and colleagues who have passed the bar on their first attempt. After following their advice, I finally passed.

First, you absolutely must have the current version of Barbri’s Mini Convisor Review. It’s all the black letter law you need to memorize for the bar exam. The law provided within this guide is complete, thorough and includes all the elements you’ll need to analyze in your essay responses. Use this review guide to create your rule statements and you’re well on your way to passing the bar exam. You can purchase it used or new.

The MBE portion requires more practice. You can use any of the MBE question books on the market and there are even online testing programs available, if that suits you. I suggest the Emmanuel Strategies and Tactics for the MBE. Answer as many practice questions as you can. You’ll need to learn from your mistakes and really notice the patterns in the questions to be able to answer all 200 questions within the time limit. Then, the night before the MBE test, only review your notes created from the answers you missed during practice.

To pass the bar exam, you need to practice. I recommend writing practice essays under timed conditions. Also, having someone else review your answers and give objective feedback is extremely helpful. I have taken several bar exam review courses, and they all, but one, over inflated my practice essay scores, which led me to believe I was performing better in practice than I did on the bar exam. When I finally found Bar Graders on the web and took more than 40 practice essays, my exam score significantly improved. These are past bar exam graders and I would want no one else grading my practice essays. Hands down, they should be your only bar review course.

Lastly, a few words about the Performance Test. Try a strategy that has you working efficiently on the performance test. There are a lot of performance exam strategies that will have you prepare a grid outline of the issues that match the law and you work from that grid to type or write your answer. Forget those graphs, charts and rainbow highlighter approaches because they don’t work and waste your precious time. Of course, many of the bar review courses include materials on the performance test, so you may not need to purchase additional materials. However, if you’re wondering what else is out there and what has worked for other bar exam takers, then its worth a search for additional materials. I wish you the very best in your preparations for the exam and in your career.

8th Fire 8th Fire Dispatches The Bronze Nomad

For decades, he symbolized the noble guide who helped Samuel de Champlain settle eastern Ontario. He’s a statue known only as “Anishinabe Scout”, and until 15 years ago, he sat perched at the feet of Champlain’s own statue at Nepean Point in Ottawa.
But Aboriginal leaders didn’t want him seen as a subordinate to settlers. Now, he sits alone in a downtown park. CBC videographer Waubgeshig Rice profiles an Ottawa artist who has followed the history of this statue and believes that its journey mirrors that of the people he represents. Editor: Marc-Antoine Cuerrier
